Altrincham took 13 athletes to the Cheshire League meeting at Ashton-under-Lyne this Sunday.

It was particularly good to see a four U11 boys take part, meaning we had enough to field a relay team. Ethan Brown, Harry Waddell and Isaac Oderinde were making their track & field debuts for the club. They were joined by regular Dom Gibson who once again continued to improve on his previous performances. Hopefully, they will have enjoyed their experience and want to be part of this developing team.

We had two U11 girls with Thea Prattley again demonstrating that she really is one to watch. Charlotte Stansfield was also in fine form, impressing in the sprint before tackling the 600m for the first time.

We had one U13 boy making his debut for the team. Angus Morris produced an outstanding finish in the 800m to overhaul a couple of tiring athletes.

Finally, the U13 girls were represented by five athletes, thus they also had a relay team. The relay was particularly exciting as Grace Adams, Kate Fitzgerald and Aisling McHale got round just fast enough to give Jade Buckley-Ratcliff the chance to storm down the straight to pip another team to the line. The team did well in the other events with Verity Charnley enabling us to fill all the counting spots in the 100m and 600m. There were also a few jawdropping performances. Jade was extremely impressive in the 100m, discus and long jump with Aisling digging out a stunningly paced race to win the 800m.

The final athlete was super veteran Barry Chapman in the javelin.

This also serves as a reminder than it can get sunny in this country. Having prepared my ‘on the day’ checklist during cross country season, it is worth remembering that sunblock and a hat are essential items during track & field season. Well, some of the time…

Thank you,
Andrew
